Mark Tunstall joins McLaren Property as Construction Director, a new role responsible for both McLaren Property and McLaren Living projects in the South of England, including developments in Watford, Reading, Brighton, Bournemouth and Exeter. 
Mark joins from Wates where he was Operations Director, a role he’s held since 2019. Mark has over 30 years construction management experience and during his career he has worked for main contractors and as client side on a broad cross section of projects.
Prior to Wates Mark was a Director at Qubed and also held positions at Mace, Costain Construction and Multiplex Constructions (UK), while gaining earlier experience at Taylor Woodrow and Al Futtaim Wimpey, Dubai, U.A.E.

McLaren Property and McLaren Living developments in the south include the redevelopment of Broad Street Mall in Reading in partnership with AEW, delivering approximately 600 Build-to-Rent homes, a mixed-use redevelopment of Watford Police Station and Magistrates Court, comprising c.300 Build-to Rent homes and approximately 30,000 sq ft of commercial space. A 164 bed co-living scheme in Exeter, a 156-bed purpose-built student accommodation scheme in Brighton and a 170-bed purpose-built student accommodation development in Bournemouth.

Mark Tunstall joins McLaren Property as Construction Director

McLaren Property has unveiled a new image of the purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme, with the go ahead confirmed following a positive planning consent from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP) and the completion of the site acquisition. Construction is expected to commence summer 2024.
The purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) development adds to McLaren Property’s strong pipeline of schemes coming forward across major cities and towns in the UK. The eight-storey building with an Art Deco style façade, inspired by the architectural history of the area, has been designed by WGP Architects, and is located on Hinton Road, providing studio accommodation for students studying at the neighbouring universities.
The BREEAM Excellent development, designed with a strong emphasis on wellbeing, includes a ground floor gym and a sophisticated student lounge with open courtyard, creating a secluded fern garden. The building will also feature a roof top lounge and large south facing terrace, with expansive views across Bournemouth beach, Sandbanks and Dorset peninsular beyond.
The building is also a zero gas building, powered by air source heat pumps and electricity, including photovoltaic panels to generate renewable energy. There will also be a biodiversity net gain on the site through improved ecology.
Centrally located the PBSA scheme is on the site of former garage workshops, with the high quality new development set to contribute to the positive future development of the wider town centre.

Green light for McLaren Property’s 170-bed Bournemouth student accommodation scheme

Manchester City Council today granted a resolution to approve a full planning permission to McLaren Property, the leading residential and student accommodation developer and Kadans Science Partner, specialist science and technology developer, for the Upper Brook Street development in Ardwick, Manchester.
McLaren Property, Kadans Science Partner, Property Alliance Group and Moda Living are working collaboratively to deliver a wider masterplan vision for Upper Brook Street. The parties involved are working to transform the suite of sites and deliver an exemplary new neighbourhood for the city.
The planning permission awarded by Manchester City Council relates to McLaren Property and Kadans Science Partner’s portion of the wider masterplan, delivering c.490,000 sq ft across two purpose-built student accommodation buildings of 9-storey and 23-storeys, totalling 737 student bedspaces (288 studios and 449 cluster bedrooms). A 9-storey building will deliver 216,000 sq ft of purpose built technical real estate space, developed by Kadans’ in-house team, whilst the student accommodation will be developed by McLaren Property.
The plans will also bring forward multi-use space for a community centre, commercial space for retail and a café, new accessible public realm, including play space, new trees and planting.

McLaren Property and Kadans expect to start construction works in Q2 2024.
Manchester City Council has also resolved to grant planning permission to Property Alliance Group and Moda Living for its portion of the wider masterplan, providing 550,000 sq ft of life science floorspace and 983 student beds, along with new community facilities.
The consortium revealed its integrated masterplan vision earlier this year, by architects Hawkins Brown, Sheppard Robson and SimpsonHaugh. The wider masterplan proposals include (in total) 766,000 sq ft of life science accommodation, 1720 student beds, community facilities and public uses, such as a GP surgery, a new community centre, a local convenience store, retail and cafes.
The plans will open up Upper Brook Street, connecting the separate sites, to create a new district with a brand new public square at its heart, providing more than two acres of new public realm and vital green amenity space, designed by Reform, for residents, workers and the local community. The plans also include improvements to key pedestrian routes and cycle connections and will ensure the new neighbourhood is connected to the wider area, and the city.
The masterplan is expected to deliver almost 6,000 new jobs to the area and construction benefits of more than £450m.
The integrated masterplan follows the key themes and design principles expressed within the Oxford Road Corridor Strategic Regeneration Framework (ORSRF), to deliver on the councils’ vision for this important strategic site.
