Highams Green is a large residential development in the heart of Highams Park, North East London. Part of the Spenhill regeneration of Highams Park for the Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association, it combines modern living spaces and community garden with a range of retail units.  McLaren was appointed as the main contractor on three major phases of the development – the first included the construction of 80 apartments and 14 terraced houses.

Built in a contemporary style with strong architectural features, the new homes are part of the first adopted “home zone” within the borough. The home zone incorporates car parking spaces with disabled bays, landscaping with three tree pits, low level planting and an external lighting scheme. A community garden, with a large landscaped area with playing apparatus for children, provides a hub for relaxing and enjoying the facilities.

The development uses a district heating system that sources energy from a local energy centre, constructed as part of a nearby Tesco store.

The new properties achieve the minimum standards set by the NHBC “Life Time Homes” and “Secured by Design” (SBD). In addition to these minimum standards, 15 of the properties are designed and constructed to achieve “Habinteg Wheelchair Design” specifications.

McLaren not only delivered full SBD certification, it also achieved Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) Level 4 on each property. This provided considerable added value to the customer and exceeded requirements without going over budget or programme period.
